I grew up playing NetHack on the Amiga, then sank hours into Flash games like Age of War as a teen. Those two games eventually fused into Castle Game. I tried to build it a few times before finally getting it right while I was on paternity leave after my daughter's birth in 2024. I built a game that I myself wanted to play.
I haven't used a mouse since 2019, so I wanted a fun strategy game I could play with only a keyboard. I live in the terminal all day, so it was a natural fit.
I call it “slow-time strategy.” The emphasis is on strategic decision making to build your castle rather than fast-twitch reflexes. Both players should always have access to the same upgrades in any given game, so that they're on an even playing field. Strategy-first, high replay value, and no pay-to-win.
